At Coal Snap ("we," "us," or "our"), we take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how Purr Diem ("the App") collects, uses, and protects your information.

Summary

TL;DR: Purr Diem is designed with privacy in mind. Your expense data stays on your device and in your personal iCloud account. We don't have access to it, we don't sell it, and we don't use it for advertising.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information You Provide

Account Information (for authentication):

  • Email address (if using Email/Password sign-in)
  • Display name (optional)
  • Sign-in provider (Apple, Google, or Email)
  • User ID (Firebase-generated)

Event and Expense Information:

  • Event information: Names, dates, budgets, categories, and notes for events you create
  • Expense information: Names, amounts, dates, categories, notes, and optional receipt photos for expenses you track
  • Per diem information: Per diem rates and calculations you set up

Where this data is stored: All of this information is stored locally on your device and, if you enable iCloud sync, in your personal iCloud account. We do not have access to your expense data.

1.2 Receipt Photos

If you choose to attach photos of receipts to your expenses:

  • Photos are stored within the app's secure storage (not in your Photos library)
  • You select receipt photos using Apple's privacy-preserving photo picker
  • Receipt photos never leave your device unless you enable iCloud sync
  • If iCloud sync is enabled, photos sync to your personal iCloud account
  • We do not have access to, process, or analyze your receipt images
  • No OCR (Optical Character Recognition) or image analysis is performed on our servers
  • Deleting an expense permanently removes its receipt photo

1.3 Information We Don't Collect

We do NOT collect:

  • Your browsing history or activity in other apps
  • Your financial account information (bank accounts, credit cards, etc.)
  • Location history or tracking data
  • Location in the background
  • Device identifiers for advertising purposes (unless you allow tracking)

1.4 Analytics & Diagnostics (Anonymous)

We collect anonymous usage analytics through Firebase Analytics to improve the app:

  • Crash reports (to fix bugs and improve stability)
  • App performance metrics
  • Device type and OS version (for compatibility)

This data is:

  • Anonymous - cannot identify individual users
  • Aggregated - combined with all other users
  • Used solely to improve app functionality and performance
  • Governed by Firebase's Privacy Policy: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy

1.5 Location Data (Optional - Receipt Verification Only)

When you scan a receipt, Purr Diem may request your location to:

  • Verify business names from OCR text
  • Match nearby businesses
  • Improve receipt scanning accuracy

Location data:

  • Only requested when you scan a receipt (not in background)
  • Uses Apple's MapKit to find nearby businesses
  • Never stored or tracked
  • Never shared with third parties
  • Can be disabled in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Purr Diem

If you decline location permission, receipt scanning still works but business name verification will be less accurate.

1.6 Subscription Information

If you purchase a premium subscription or lifetime purchase:

  • Payment processed entirely by Apple through the App Store
  • We do not receive or store your payment information
  • We receive only a StoreKit transaction ID to verify your subscription status
  • Your subscription is linked to your Apple ID, not your email address
  • We store your subscription status (premium vs free) to enable/disable features
  • Subscription data syncs via Firebase to enable premium features across devices
  • Apple's privacy policy governs all payment transactions

Subscription data stored:

  • Premium status (true/false)
  • Product ID (monthly/yearly/lifetime)
  • Purchase date
  • Original transaction ID
  • Renewal status

This data is used solely to:

  • Unlock premium features
  • Verify subscription status
  • Handle subscription changes (upgrades, cancellations)
  • Enable "Restore Purchases" functionality

2. How We Use Your Information

2.1 Primary Purpose

Your expense data is used solely to provide the core functionality of the app:

  • Displaying your events and expenses
  • Calculating budgets and per diem amounts
  • Generating reports and analytics
  • Exporting data in PDF or CSV format (Premium feature)

2.2 iCloud Sync

If you enable iCloud sync:

  • Your data is encrypted and transmitted to your personal iCloud account
  • iCloud sync is governed by Apple's iCloud Terms of Service and Privacy Policy
  • We do not have access to your iCloud data
  • You can disable iCloud sync at any time in Settings

2.3 Customer Support

If you contact us for support:

  • We may collect your email address and any information you voluntarily provide
  • This information is used solely to respond to your inquiry
  • We do not share this information with third parties
  • Support emails are deleted after your issue is resolved (typically 90 days)

3. Data Sharing and Third Parties

3.1 We Don't Sell Your Data

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. Period.

3.2 Third-Party Services

Purr Diem uses the following services:

  • Firebase (Google): Authentication, Analytics (anonymous), and subscription status sync
  • iCloud (optional): For syncing your data across your devices
  • StoreKit (Apple): For processing in-app purchases and subscriptions
  • MapKit (Apple): For verifying business names during receipt scanning
  • Google AdMob (Free users only): Display advertisements

These services are provided by Apple and Google and are governed by their respective privacy policies. We do not share your expense data with any third parties.

3.3 Legal Requirements

We may disclose information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., a court order or subpoena). However, because we don't collect or have access to your expense data, there is very little information we could provide.

4. Data Security

4.1 How We Protect Your Data

  • Local storage: Your data is stored securely on your device using iOS secure storage mechanisms
  • iCloud encryption: When using iCloud sync, your data is encrypted in transit and at rest
  • No server storage: We do not store your expense data on our servers
  • Secure communication: All communications with Apple and Google services use industry-standard encryption

4.2 Your Responsibilities

To protect your data:

  • Use a strong passcode or biometric authentication on your device
  • Keep your device's operating system up to date
  • Be careful when exporting data (PDF/CSV files contain unencrypted information)
  • Enable two-factor authentication for your Apple ID if using iCloud sync

5. Your Privacy Rights

5.1 Access and Control

Because all your data is stored locally on your device:

  • Access: You have full access to all your data at all times within the app
  • Export: You can export all your data in CSV or PDF format (Premium feature)
  • Delete: You can delete individual expenses, events, or all data directly in the app
  • Account Deletion: Delete your account in Settings → Account → Delete Account
  • Portability: Your exported data is in standard formats that can be used in other applications

5.2 Deleting Your Data

To completely remove your data:

  • Delete your account in Settings → Account → Delete Account (removes all data immediately), or
  • Delete events and expenses within the app, or
  • Uninstall Purr Diem from your device
  • If using iCloud sync, disable iCloud for Purr Diem in Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud

Once deleted, your data cannot be recovered unless you have a device backup.

5.3 European Users (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):

  • Right to access your data
  • Right to rectification (correction)
  • Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten")
  • Right to data portability
  • Right to object to processing

5.4 California Users (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

  • Right to know what personal information is collected
  • Right to delete personal information
  • Right to opt-out of the sale of personal information (we don't sell your data)
  • Right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

6. Children's Privacy

Purr Diem is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at privacy@coalsnap.com.

7. International Data Transfers

If you use iCloud sync or Firebase authentication, your data may be transferred to and stored on Apple's and Google's servers in various countries. These transfers are governed by Apple's and Google's respective Terms of Service and Privacy Policies. We do not independently transfer your data across borders.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do:

  • We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy
  • If changes are significant, we will notify you through the app or via email (if we have your contact information)
  • Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy

We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.

10. Additional Information

10.1 Data Retention

Your expense data is retained on your device indefinitely until you delete it. We do not impose automatic data retention limits. If using iCloud sync, data retention follows Apple's iCloud storage policies.

10.2 Cookies and Tracking

Purr Diem does not use cookies, tracking pixels, or any form of web tracking within the app. Firebase Analytics collects anonymous usage data as described in Section 1.4.

10.3 Do Not Track

We respect your privacy by default. You can control ad tracking through App Tracking Transparency (see Section 10.4).

10.4 Advertising

Free tier users may see advertisements within the app. These ads are provided by Google AdMob and are subject to Google's privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy). We do not collect personal information for advertising purposes. Premium subscribers do not see any advertisements.

App Tracking Transparency:

  • On first launch, you'll be asked to allow tracking for personalized ads
  • You can change this anytime in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking
  • Declining tracking will show contextual ads instead
